VM0042 requires you to measure and account for three greenhouse gases: CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O. Understanding why each matters, and how to compare them, is the foundation of everything else.

What Are Greenhouse Gases?

In plain terms: greenhouse gases are invisible gases in the air that act like a heat trap. Sunlight passes through them on the way in, but when the ground tries to radiate heat back out, these gases absorb it and keep it near the surface.

Formal definition: greenhouse gases (GHGs) are atmospheric gases that absorb and re-emit infrared radiation, warming the lower atmosphere. The more GHGs accumulate, the stronger this warming effect becomes.

  • CO₂ is a thin cotton sheet, it's abundant and lasts 300–1,000 years in the atmosphere.
  • CH₄ (methane) is a wool blanket, 28× warmer than CO₂ per molecule, but only lasts ~12 years.
  • N₂O (nitrous oxide) is a heavy duvet, 265× warmer than CO₂ per molecule and lasts over 100 years.

Global Warming Potential (GWP)

Think of it this way: not all gases are equally dangerous. A small amount of methane heats the planet far more than the same amount of CO₂. To add them up fairly, scientists invented a single "currency", CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e).

Formal definition: Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a measure of how much heat a gas traps over 100 years relative to CO₂. It lets us convert any GHG into an equivalent CO₂ mass so all gases can be summed in a single number.

These conversions are used every day by real carbon projects around the world, not just in textbooks. Here are three examples:

  • Kenya Agricultural Carbon Project (KACP): Smallholder farms in western Kenya switching to conservation agriculture track CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O to generate Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). GWP conversions let the project report a single tCO₂e figure to Verra.
  • Indigo Ag Carbon Program (USA): Row-crop farmers in the US Midwest earn payments for cover crops and reduced tillage. The program uses GWP to convert N₂O reductions from lower nitrogen application into CO₂e credits.
  • Rice AWD projects (Vietnam, Philippines): Alternate Wetting and Drying drastically cuts CH₄ from flooded paddies. Multiplying the CH₄ reduction by GWP = 28 shows just how large the climate benefit is, often 2–5 tCO₂e/ha/season.

📐 Worked Example: Converting to CO₂e

A rice paddy emits 10 tonnes of CH₄ per year.
CO₂e = 10 × 28 = 280 tonnes CO₂e/year

A wheat field emits 2 tonnes of N₂O per year from fertilizer.
CO₂e = 2 × 265 = 530 tonnes CO₂e/year

Note: These are converted to CO₂e so they can be added together in the total GHG budget.

Agriculture's Share of Global Emissions

Agriculture is one of the most significant contributors to climate change, and also one of the best opportunities to reverse it.

Agriculture contributes roughly 10–12% of global GHG emissions directly. Including land-use change (clearing forests for new farmland), the share rises to nearly 24%. The three gases tracked in VM0042 account for the vast majority of farm-level emissions:

  • CO₂ from soil disturbance (tillage, land conversion)
  • CH₄ from rice paddies and livestock
  • N₂O from nitrogen fertilizers and manure
